12 Good Reasons For Hot DIP Galvanizing |
|
1. Competitive initial cost
For many applications the cost of Galvanizing is comparatively lower than that of applying alternative coatings.
2. Lowest lifetime cost
The low initial cost and long lasting effect of galvanizing makes it the most versatile and economic way of protecting steel for long periods of time.
3. Cost Efficient
Most coating articles require extensive labour. The increase in coating costs is directly reflected in the increase of labour wages.
4. Long Lasting
Well documented years of experience have proved the benefits of hot dip galvanized protection. 10-20 years and 25 years of duration are commonplace in industrial and marine environment respectively. When maintenance eventually becomes neccessary it is relatively straight forward: No complex preparation treatments are neccessary.
5. Reliability
The process is relatively simple, straight forward and closely controlled. The thickness (weights) of coatings formed are regular, predictable and simply specified. Galvanizing is one of the few coatings which is completely defined by National standard (ASTM 153, BS729, JIS 7141).
6. Coating endurance
Galvanizing is unique, the hot dip process produces a coating which is bonded metallurgically to the steel. No other coating process has this feature, and as a result galvanized steel has by far the greatest resistance to mechanical damage during handling, storage transport and erection. Furthermore, the tough quality of this protection makes it particularly suitable for use in situations where abrasion could be a problem.
7. Long-term usage and maintenance free
Compared to other types of coating, it is pratically maintenance free, thus saving cost. There are bonuses from no maintenance or extended maintenance intervals; fewer problems of access in remote areas, difficult terrain or when buildings are closely packed together, also when there are safety restrictions; e.g. electricity pylons.
8. Protection
Galvanizing's cathodic protection for steel ensures that small areas of the base steel exposed through severe impacts or abrasion are protected from corrosion by the surrounding galvanized coating.
9. Complete coverage
Because it is formed by dipping steel in molten zinc, all parts of the surface of the steel are coated inclusive of inside and outside of awkward corners, and narrow gaps which would be quite impossible to protect otherwise. In addition, the coating buids up at vital corners and edges - rather than thinning out as when brushed, sprayed etc.
10. Convenient inspection
Galvanized steel simplifies the inspection process of the protective finish. The nature of this process is such that if the coating looks continuous and sound, it is so. Thickness (weights) can be easily checked with a magnetic probe or any other simple non-destructive testing gauge.
11. Quick and Fast
No additional site surface preparation, painting, touch up or inspection is neccessary. Once erected the galvanized steel is ready for use, and cladding can begin immediately, thus accelerating the construction programme.
12. Mechanical capability
The mechanical capability of common steels are not significantly affected by galvanizing.
